كتاب عظيم في بابه، ضمّ بين دفتيه 544 حديث مرسل، مرتبة على الأبواب، وغالبها مما صح إسناده إلى مرسله، وكتاب المراسيل هذا يأتي ترتيبه من حيث الحجية والاستدلال بعد كتاب (السنن)، وأغلب الظن أن مؤلفه أبا داود رحمه الله قصد بتأليفه أن يكون مرجعًا للفقيه، يعتمد نصوصه، ويستنبط منها، ويفتي بموجبها إذا لم يرد في المسألة حديث صحيح متصل يغني غناءها، فهو يرى تبعًا لشيخه أحمد الاحتجاج بالمرسل إذا لم يكن في الباب أثبت منه ويرجحه على القياس
