إن معنى الشَّمائل النَّبويَّة لغةً: الأخلاق الحميدة والطبائع الحسنة
قال في القاموس المحيط: الشِّمال: الطبع، والجمع: شمائل
وقال في لسان العرب: والشِّمالُ: خليقة الرجل، وجمعها: شمائل، وإنها لحسنةُ الشمائل. ورجل كريم الشمائل، أي في أخلاقه ومخالطته
والشَّمائل النَّبويَّة اصطلاحاً: تشملُ أخلاقَهُ صلى الله عليه وسلم الشريفة، وتتبعُها أوصافُ صورته الظاهرة
وأما الدلائل النَّبويَّة، فهي علامات النبوَّة المتمثِّلة بالبشارات والإرهاصات، والمعجزات الربَّانيَّة، والكونيَّة، والحسِّيَّة، والإخبار عن الغيوب المستقبليَّ
